About 31,600 asylum applications were registered in the Netherlands in 2016, almost half lower than that in the peak year 2015 (about 58,900), the Dutch immigration service IND announced Monday.

Among these applications, including first asylum applications, repeated asylum applications and family members of asylum status holders, 34 percent came from Syrian nationals, followed by Eritreans (9 percent) and Albanians (5 percent).

More than 57 percent of the total influx of asylum seekers in 2016 related to first asylum applications, lower than 73 percent in 2015.

The top three of nationalities of persons who submitted first asylum applications were formed by Syrians (12 percent), Albanians (9 percent) and Eritreans (8 percent).

Rob van Lint, director of the IND, told Dutch press that since the agreement between Turkey and the European Union (EU) last March, "the influx of asylum seekers, especially from Syria, has gone down a lot." Endit
