Former England manager Taylor dies aged 72

Xinhua, January 12, 2017 Adjust font size:

Former England manager Graham Taylor, who took Watford to play two friendlies in China in 1983, died at the age of 72 on Thursday.

A family statement said: "With the greatest sadness, we have to announce that Graham passed away at his home early this morning of a suspected heart attack.

"The family are devastated by this sudden and totally unexpected loss."

As a club manager, he led Watford from the Fourth Division to runners-up in the old First Division in five years and to the final of the 1984 FA Cup.

In a visit to China in June 1983, he guided Watford to play two matches against Chinese national team, winning 3-1 in Beijing and 5-1 in Shanghai.

He went on to become the manager of Aston Villa in 1987 just before Watford's second visit to China and led Villa to second in the First Division.

Taylor became England boss in 1990 but resigned in 1993 after the team failed to qualify for the 1994 World Cup.

He returned to Watford and Villa after his England stint as well as managing Wolves. Endit
