The following are news highlights in Zambia's major media outlets on Saturday.
-- Zambian President Edgar Lungu has threatened to intervene and stop what he suspects to be a deliberate manipulation of the market by traders increasing the price of mealie meal.
Amos Chanda, the presidential spokesperson said Lungu was disappointed that despite all factors being equal, the retail price of the staple food was still skyrocketing. (Daily Nation)
-- The Kenyan government has appealed to Zambia to support its minister of foreign affairs for the position of chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission.
Kenya's Foreign Affairs Minister Amina Mohamed is among those contending for the AU top job during elections slated for this month.
Kenya High Commissioner to Zambia Sophy Kombe said the AU commission chairmanship was an important position which has a lot of influence in the running of affairs in the continent. (Zambia Daily Mail)
-- Miners at Konkola Copper Mines (KCM), a unit of Vedanta Resources Plc, have resumed work after a three day protest demanding a pay rise.
Operations at Shaft number 1 and 3 in Zambia's Chililabombwe district on the Copperbelt Province were paralyzed as the miners refused to go underground for their daily operations.
The miners said they decided to resume work in order to allow the government to hold talks with both management and the union representatives. (The Mast)
-- Skipper of the Zambia national soccer team Rainford Kalaba said he was disappointed that the former head of the country's soccer governing body decided to vote Zimbabwe's Khama Biliat and Uganda's Dennis Onyango over him during the Confederation of African Football (CAF) voting for the African Player of the Year based in Africa.
Kalaba came third while Uganda's goalkeeper Onyango emerged winner followed by Zimbabwe's Biliat.
Kalaba said he was disappointed that Kalusha Bwalya, the former president of the Football Association of Zambia did not give him first priority but has promised to bounce back. (Times of Zambia). Endit
