Albania sets up emergency units to cope with bad weather conditions

Xinhua, January 6, 2017 Adjust font size:

Albanian government has set up several civil emergencies teams and has taken all necessary measures to cope with the chaotic situation in Albania caused by bad weather conditions, the country's Prime Minister Edi Rama said Thursday.

Rama called in a meeting of the civil emergency structures and relevant institutions to discuss measures to mitigate the impact of adverse weather conditions.

According to the prime minister, all relevant structures are working in terrain in order to unblock the national roads as well as assist families in villages isolated by snow.

According to the interior ministry, several villages in the north of Albania are totally isolated by the snow reaching over 1.5 meters.

Freezing temperatures and heavy snowfalls have hit mainly northern and southeastern parts of Albania over the past few days.

The weather is expected to get even worse as the meteorologists forecast a strong decline of temperatures by between minus 4 and minus 20 degrees Celsius in the coming days. Endit
