11 die as bus veers off road in Kenya

Xinhua, January 5, 2017 Adjust font size:

Eleven people were killed and seven others injured when a commuter minibus lost control and veered off the road early Thursday in Kisumu county, west Kenya.

Regional traffic police commander Andrew Naibei said the 11 died at the scene after the bus veered off the Katito-Kendu Bay Road and crashed into a culvert at around 7 a.m..

Naibei said the injured, some of whom sustained serious injuries, had been rushed to hospital.

The officer suspected the vehicle, which was on its way from Sirare in Migori county to Kisumu town, was speeding.

"Among the victims were students who were reporting back to school," Naibei said.

Kisumu County Commissioner Mohammed Maalim said initial investigations had revealed that the vehicle were carrying excess passengers. Endit
