Lithuania's tax chief suspended over corruption allegations

Xinhua, January 5, 2017 Adjust font size:

Director of Lithuania's State Tax Inspectorate (VMI) Dainoras Bradauskas has been suspended from duty due to alleged corrupt practices, the ministry of finance said Wednesday.

The VMI chief has not faced any criminal charges so far, and the ministry will conduct internal investigation into Bradauskas' activities, local media reported.

"State Tax Inspectorate is one of the most important institutions in the country, therefore, its chief's activities must be beyond any doubts," Finance Minister Vilnius Sapoka said in the ministry's statement.

Bradauskas will be suspended from his duties during the ministry's internal investigation, Sapoka said without elaborating the details of Bradauskas' alleged transgressions.

The ministry said the decision was based on data collected by Lithuania's Special Investigation Service (STT).

STT Spokeswoman Renata Saulyte told news agency Elta that a pre-trial investigation into Bradauskas' activities might be launched if additional information emerges.

Bradauskas has been serving as the VMI chief since April 2015. Endi
