Slovakia's 2016 road fatalities second lowest in 50 years: official

Xinhua, January 5, 2017 Adjust font size:

A total of 242 people were killed in road accidents in Slovakia in 2016, the second lowest number in the past 50 years, Slovak Interior Minister Robert Kalinak said on Wednesday.

According to Kalinak, Slovak authorities did well to bring down the number of fatalities, given that fewer number of police officers were deployed after the country faced a number of security challenges last year.

Since a reform of the country's traffic system from 2008 to 2009, more than 3,000 lives have been saved, according to Kalinak.

After a record low number of road fatalities in 2013, the number of people died from traffic accidents began to rise in the following two years.

The number of registered vehicles in Slovakia rose by a million within 10 years to reach almost 2.95 million in 2016, and the number of drivers rose by 700,000 to reach 3.46 million over the same period. Enditem
