Czech Republic soldiers to join military exercise in Lithuania

Xinhua, January 5, 2017 Adjust font size:

The Czech Republic will send about 110 soldiers to take part in a military exercise in Lithuania on January 8, a military spokesman said on Wednesday.

The Training Bridge 2017 military exercise is organised in reaction to the Baltic states' concerns of regional security, according to Czech General Staff spokesman Jan Sulc.

The Czech soldiers are mostly from the light motorized battalion in Bucovice, south Moravia. From January 10 to March 20, they will be trained along with their Lithuanian counterparts near the Klaipeda port city.

The Czech troops will take light armoured vehicles with them when joining the exercise.

The joint exercise was agreed on by Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and the countries of the Visegrad Group (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia) before the NATO's Warsaw Summit in 2016.

Klaipeda is not far from the Kalinigrad Oblast, Russia's western-most region bordering Poland and Lithuania. Endit
