The Portuguese government on Sunday condemned the New Year Eve attack on an Istanbul nightclub that killed at least 39 people and left dozens wounded.

"The Portuguese government firmly condemns the attack which took place on Sunday in Istanbul. The government expresses its solidarity with the people and the Turkish authorities and reaffirms its determination in Portugal to fight against terrorism in all forms," said a government statement. RIO DE JANEIRO -- At least 12 people were killed and three more wounded during a shootout at a New Year party in southeastern Brazil, police sources revealed Sunday.

The attack took place in the city of Campinas, near Sao Paulo, when a man climbed the wall of a house and shot his ex-wife, his 8-year-old son and various other relatives, before turning the gun on himself. More ammunition was found on his body. (Brazil-New Year Party-Death)

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir -- Troops of India and Pakistan on Sunday exchanged heavy fire and targeted each other's positions on the Line of Control (LoC) dividing Kashmir, officials said. ' The two sides exchanged fire on the LoC in Poonch district, about 180 km southwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir. (India-Pakistan-Kashmir)

MOSUL -- Iraqi security forces on Sunday extended their grip in the city of Mosul after intense fighting with Islamic State (IS) group in the fourth day of a renewed push to retake control of the eastern part of the city, the Iraqi military said.

The heaviest clashes took place in southeastern the city as the federal police and soldiers of the 9th Armored Division fought fierce clashes with IS militants and managed to push into neighborhoods of Yafa and Younis al-Sab'awi, in addition to recapturing the vital street of Siteen, a statement by the Iraqi Joint Operations Command said.
