57 militants killed in military operations: Afghan gov't

Xinhua, December 31, 2016 Adjust font size:

Some 57 militants have been killed and 44 others wounded as Afghan security forces pressed ahead with offensives in restive provinces over the last day, the Defense Ministry said Saturday.

"The Afghan National Defense and Security Forces carried out cleanup and military operations in 11 of the 34 Afghan provinces within the past 24 hours, killing 57 armed militants and wounding 44 others," the ministry said in a statement.

They also seized weapons and defused several roadside bombs planted by the militants, the statement said, without elaborating casualties among security forces.

The Taliban insurgents and other militants responded with bombings and armed attacks.

On Friday night, a policeman of a bomb disposal team was killed and another one was wounded after a roadside bombing struck a police vehicle in Ishkamish district of northern Takhar province, a provincial police spokesman told Xinhua earlier on Saturday. Endit
