U.S. stocks open higher in last trading day of 2016

Xinhua, December 30, 2016 Adjust font size:

U.S. stocks opened slightly higher on Friday, the last trading day of 2016, as investors looked ahead to the start of 2017.

Trading volume was expected to be thin Friday as investors had little news to digest before the New Year holiday.

After the Dow Jones Industrial Average drifted away from the 20,000 mark earlier this week, analysts said the Santa rally has run out of steam.

Oil prices were in focus on Friday, as the U.S. oil lost 0.48 percent and Brent crude shed 0.46 percent in the early trading.

Overseas, Tokyo shares closed mixed Friday. The Nikkei index ended slightly lower as investors locked in gains at the end of this year.

Shortly after the opening bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 8.09 points, or 0.04 percent, to 19,827.87. The S&P 500 gained 1.31 points, or 0.06 percent, to 2,250.57. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 0.93 points, or 0.02 percent, to 5,433.02.

U.S. stocks reversed gains to end slightly lower Thursday, as Wall Street digested a batch of economic reports. Endi
