The following are news highlights in Zambia's major media outlets on Thursday.

-- Construction of a motor vehicle assembling plant in Lusaka, the Zambian capital, has commenced and the venture was expected to create 500 jobs.

The 175-million-U.S.-dollars plant, with a capacity of 20 units a day, is being constructed by a local firm, Gonow Zambia Limited, which has partnered with China Zhejiang Gonow Auto Company. (Zambia Daily Mail)

-- About ten prisoners have escaped from a correctional facility in southern Zambia's Sinazongwe district after breaking the wall of the holding cell during the Christmas holiday.

The police have since launched a manhunt to re-arrest the inmates. (Times of Zambia)

-- A former Zambian vice-president said a commission of inquiry currently sitting to receive submissions on the violence that characterized the 2016 general elections was a sham and a wild goose chase which will not yield any desired results.

The Commission of Inquiry on Violence, established by President Edgar Lungu on October 21, started its sittings in Lusaka, the country's capital, last week to receive submissions from stakeholders.

But Godfrey Miyanda said the inquiry was a sheer waste of time and public resources as previous inquiries have been shelved without being acted on. (The Mast)

-- The Zambia national women soccer team has expressed confidence in beating Malawi during an international friendly match slated for Friday.

The Shepolopolo left for Malawi on Wednesday for an international friendly match as part of preparations for the 2018 Under-20 FIFA World Cup qualification series.

Head coach Enala Simbeye said the players were not under pressure but were in shape and mentally ready to handle the Malawian side. (Daily Nation) Endit
