Mexican airline cancels 25 flights for Russian-made fleet check

Mexico's budget airline Interjet on Monday canceled at least 25 flights for an inspection of its Russian-made fleet, the country's consumer protection agency Profeco said.

Regarding the 680 people affected, the agency said it was "looking to rebook the stranded passengers onto the next available flight," or helping them get to another airport, amid the holiday crush.

If the measures do not work, Profeco agreed to return the cost of the tickets in full.

The agency said in a statement that the Interjet planes were grounded for inspection following the recommendation of Russian authorities.

The airline's fleet includes 25 Superjet 100 planes.

Interjet said in a statement that the inspection was simply a precautionary measure, and that the alert issued by Russian aviation authorities was unrelated to Sunday's Russian plane crash in the Black Sea.

The crashed Russian plane was a Tupolev Tu-154 jetliner flying to Syria. All the 84 passengers and eight crew members aboard were killed.

Interjet is Mexico's third largest airline, operating flights to major Mexican cities, as well as the United States, Cuba, Costa Rica, Colombia and Peru. Endi
