India condemns Russian envoy's assassination in Turkey

Xinhua, December 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

India has strongly condemned the assassination of Russian Ambassador to Turkey saying that there can never be any justification for violence and terrorism.

"India strongly condemns the tragic assassination of the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Turkey. We are deeply saddened and shocked by this dastardly act," the External Affairs Ministry said in a statement Tuesday.

The Russian ambassador was shot dead by an off-duty Turkish policeman at an art exhibition in Ankara late Monday evening, apparently in protest at Moscow's involvement in Aleppo. The killer has been identified as Mevlut Mert Altintas, 22, a member of the Ankara riot police.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that the attack was aimed at hurting ties with Russia. In televised remarks, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the act was "undoubtedly a provocation aimed at disrupting the normalisation" of bilateral ties and "peace process in Syria". Endit
