Ugandan investigators freeze football body's accounts

Xinhua, December 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

Financial investigators have frozen the accounts of Uganda's football governing body, a move that may disrupt the country's preparation for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Sydney Asubo from Uganda Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA), a state agency that investigates financial fraud among others, declined to give details as to why the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) accounts were frozen.

"We have been investigating the Football Federation since last year, and freezing some of the accounts now is in line with what we are meant to do," Asubo told Xinhua on Sunday.

In October last year, the FIA froze the FUFA accounts over suspicions of money laundering.

Moses Magogo, FUFA president, said the latest action by FIA was crippling preparations to make the national team ready for next month's AFCON.

Uganda is the only country in the Council for East and Central African Football Associations region that qualified for the AFCON scheduled to take place in Gabon.

Asubo said in their investigations, they are mindful of the country's need to prepare AFCON.

Charles Bakkabulindi, State Minister for Sports said although he is aware of the freezing of the accounts, FUFA is yet to inform him formally before he takes another step. Endit
