Dozens evacuated after fire at Nickel mine in Finland

Xinhua, December 17, 2016 Adjust font size:

Dozens of people were evacuated after fire broke out on Friday at a nickel mine in Sotkamo, central Finland, local media reported.

Both production lines of the mine were closed after the fire, which was caused by hydrogen sulfide leakage, and one of them would be restored in a few days, local media quoted Terraframe CEO Joni Lukkaroinen as saying.

Terraframe mine produces nickel and zinc with a leaching method. Hydrogen sulfide is being used in the process to recover metals.

Hydrogen sulfide is a colorless gas which has the foul odor of rotten eggs, and is poisonous. In 2012, a man was killed at the mine after inhaling hydrogen sulfide. Investigators later said the mine was careless in planning its production. Endit
