Consistency, activeness and continuity are among the new Lithuanian government's main principles regarding foreign policy, Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis said on Thursday.
Skvernelis presented the main objectives of the country's foreign policy during a meeting with EU countries' ambassadors.
"The Lithuanian foreign policy is based on long-term national interests and the continuity of their implementation," Skvernelis said in a statement.
He also said that NATO would remain the most important and effective collective defense system ensuring the security of the state.
"We will continue the compliance with the NATO commitments, and our defense spending will amount to 1.8 percent of GDP in 2017," Skvernelis said.
Closer cooperation among the Baltic and Scandinavian states, and an open bilateral dialogue and cooperation with Poland were among the priorities of this government, the head of government noted.
Skvernelis's new government was sworn in on Tuesday after winning a confidence vote in parliament, also on Tuesday. Endit
