Negotiations for rebel evacuation get more complicated
Xinhua, December 15, 2016 Adjust font size:
The negotiations for the evacuation of the rebels from the eastern part of the northern city of Aleppo is getting more complicated, the media arm of the Syrian army said Wednesday evening.
The report denied talks about an imminent truce or rebel evacuation as baseless.
The evacuation of the rebels was expected to take place at dawn Wednesday, but for unknown reasons, the evacuation has not taken place yet, with the total absence of any official comment.
A day earlier, Vitaly Churkin, Russia's representative to the UN, said during a UN Security Council session that "a deal has been reached for the evacuation of only the rebels from Aleppo in the next hours," stressing that "no one will harm the civilians."
However, the deal, struck by Russia and Turkey, was not implemented, amid talks of ongoing negotiations.
This comes as the Syrian army is now in control of 99 percent of the rebel-held areas in eastern Aleppo city.
Tens of thousands of people have fled eastern Aleppo over the past couple of weeks, with local media reports placing the number of evacuees at 85,000.
The Syrian army said recently that the battles will continue until fully liberating Aleppo from the rebel groups. Endit
