U.S. Coast Guard and Cuban Border Guard hold meeting in Havana

Xinhua, December 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Cuban Border Guard and U.S. Coast Guard held their sixth technical meeting on December 12-13 in Havana, the island's foreign ministry disclosed on Wednesday.

According to a statement by the ministry, the reunion took place in a "respectful and professional climate."

Both delegations stressed the usefulness of these technical meetings to exchange experiences and coordinate responses against common challenges, such as irregular migration, and human and drug trafficking.

The two sides agreed that their bilateral collaboration was relevant to both operations.

Despite lacking formal links, the Border Guard, which belongs to Cuba's Interior Ministry, and the U.S. Coast Guard maintained a discreet cooperation.

The U.S. "wet foot, dry foot" policy means that the Coast Guard regularly repatriates Cuban migrants caught at sea. In October and November alone, the Coast Guard repatriated 827 Cubans.

Cuba and the United States restored diplomatic relations in July 2015. Since then the two neighboring nations have taken steps ahead to normalize ties and expand collaboration in several areas. Enditem
