Sun Yu of China beat Olympic champion Carolina Marin of Spain 21-18, 24-22 in the opening match of the Dubai Badminton World Superseries Finals here on Wednesday.

Ranked 10th in the world, Sun played an aggressive match, leaving Marin no chance than "running behind the points". Despite a lack-luster second set, the 22-year-old managed to maintain the upper hand and took her first victory in Group B of the women's singles home.

South Korea's Sung Ji Hyun won against Thailand' s Ratchanok Intanon 21-19, 21-12, while 2014 champion Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei left few chances for China's He Bingjiao to score, winning 21-16, 21-13.

In women's doubles Group B, runners-up of 2015 Christinna Pedersen/Kamilla Rytter Juhl from Denmark were victorious against Malaysia's Vivian Hoo/Woon Khe Wei (21-7 21-17). Women's Doubles defending champions Luo Ying/Luo Yu had an unlucky start as they lost 21-19, 21-15 to South Korea's Chang Ye Na/Lee So Hee in Group A.

The BWF Dubai World Superseries Finals will run through Sunday, December 18. Endit
