The twin sons of Iraqi ambassador in Portugal, who were accused of assaulting a teenager, will be absent from Lisbon between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5, the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in an official note sent to media Wednesday.

Local broadcaster RTP reported on Tuesday night that the sons of the Iraqi ambassador had headed to Istanbul, Turkey.

The lawyer of the victim's family said he was informally noticed of their departure and that it will not affect the current process.

Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs also disclosed in the statement that it had solicited Iraq to lift diplomatic immunity from the ambassador's sons on Dec. 7 and demanded a definitive response from the Iraqi authorities within a maximum period of 20 working days.

The ministry first asked Iraq to lift diplomatic immunity from the twins on Aug. 25, but has been waiting for a decision by the authorities.

The 17-year old twins, Haider and Ridha Ali, were accused of attacking 15-year old Ruben Cavaco in Ponte de Sor around 180 km northeast of Lisbon on Aug. 17. Enditem
