Myanmar takes initiative to change citizenship scrutiny card to smart card

Xinhua, December 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Myanmar government is taking an initial step to change the current citizenship scrutiny card to smart card or e-ID in coordination with IT experts and organizations as part of its e-government process, said Minister of Labor, Immigration and Population U Thein Swe Wednesday.

As a pilot project for such transformation, biographic data of each citizen is being collected in Nay Pyi Taw's Sabuthiri township and Mandalay region making use of experiences obtained through related seminars, U Thein Swe told the House of Nationalities (Upper House) .

With the assistance of the World Bank, similar seminar will be held by the ministry next month to create smart card with international experiences that will suit the country, the minister also told Xinhua.

Earlier in September, MPs of the House of Representatives (Lower House) called for effective implementation of e-government system to boost government administration work, agreeing that implementation of the e-government system will be of great benefit to the country and its citizens and boost administration work.

More MPs said e-government, which is a useful system of public management through ICT, can boost public trust in the government as better services can be brought to the people through effective management. Endit
