Frontex helps train Libyan coast guards in Mediterranean

Xinhua, December 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, is training 62 Libyan coast guards this week, the agency said in a press release Tuesday.

The training was on San Giorgio, a vessel taking part in the European Union's (EU) naval operation against human smuggling in the Mediterranean.

The aim of the training is to increase the border control capacities of the Libyan coast guard and navy, including search and rescue operations at sea.

The topics covered by nine Frontex trainers include preparing and planning law enforcement operations and combating smuggling and trafficking of human beings.

According to Frontex, in the first 11 months of this year, nearly 173,000 migrants crossed the central Mediterranean and arrived in Italy. Most of them departed from Libya. Endit
