Poll shows Slovenians fear new migration wave

Xinhua, December 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

Over 80 percent of Slovenian respondents in a poll by the Delo daily believed tensions between Turkey and the EU could result in a new migration wave, media reported on Monday.

In such a case, more than half (56 percent) also supported a border fence on Slovenia's border with Croatia, the Slovenian Press Agency (STA) reported.

One out of three respondents (32 percent) believed Slovenia should shut down its border, and almost half (48 percent) would close down the border for everyone except for those in urgent need of help.

Meanwhile, more than half of those questioned would vote against Turkey's membership of the EU in a referendum, and less than a third would vote in favor.

The poll, run in Monday's edition of the paper, comes after the European Parliament called for suspending EU accession talks with Turkey in a non-binding vote in late November.

The poll was conducted by the newspaper among 600 respondents between Nov. 29 and Dec. 1. Endit
