Caribbean Community vows to help end Western isolation, embargo against Cuba

Xinhua, December 9, 2016 Adjust font size:

The 15-member Caribbean Community (Caricom) vowed Thursday to work for ending Western isolation and embargo against Cuba.

Caricom remains steadfast in this regard, said Prime Minister of Dominica Roosevelt Skerrit, chairman of the community.

"Caricom has long been an advocate for the normalization of the relations between the United States and Cuba," said Skerrit.

"While we welcome the progress in that regard, we reiterate the community's call for the full lifting of the economic, trade and financial embargo against that sister nation," he added.h For decades, Caricom has benefited from the generous and meaningful assistance from Cuba, including medical professionals it needed badly, said Skerrit.

Cuba has also assisted in regional capacity building in the social and cultural fields, and in strengthening Caricom capabilities in disaster management, agriculture and sports, he said.

Skerrit also paid tribute to Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, who died last month at the age of 90.

"The Caribbean Community will remember former President Fidel Castro, as an outstanding friend and genuine partner who offered the expertise of his country," said Skerrit. Endi
