Tokyo shares open higher on ECB decision, strong U.S. stocks

Tokyo shares opened higher Friday on strong U.S. stocks as well as the European Central Bank's decision to extend its bond buying program.

As of 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 101.06 points, or 0.54 percent, from Thursday to 18,866.53.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 1.80 points, or 0.12 percent, to 1,514.49.

Gainers were led by mining, oil and coal product, and other product issues. Endit
