Estonian president calls for EU to play stronger global role

Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid called for the European Union (EU) to play a stronger global role during a visit to France, the president's office reported on Thursday.

Kaljulaid met with French President Francois Hollande on the future of the European Union and its role in global policy, security issues as well as cyber security and the choices offered by e-governance, said the press release.

"France is a very important ally for Estonia. Security is built by us together," said Kaljulaid.

Both countries have participated in operations in Mali, Central African Republic, and Operation Atlanta to fight against piracy. France also is contributing to the NATO battalion to be deployed in Estonia next year.

"The European Union will only remain strong if it remains uniform and focuses on the important issues that individual member states can't tackle alone," said the Estonian head of state, referring to migration crisis, environmental issues and energy security among other issues.

Hollande expressed interest in Estonia's progress in the development of the e-governance and cyber security sphere. Endit
