Slovakia, Czech Republic to cooperate in airspace protection

Xinhua, December 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Slovak Cabinet on Wednesday approved an agreement that presupposes closer cooperation between Slovakia and the Czech Republic in the protection of their airspace.

Both nations protect their skies via the NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence System (IAMD).

"This agreement only extends the scope of the cooperation. It means that if Slovakia or the Czech Republic temporarily lose their capacity to protect their own air spaces, the other side will provide that protection," explained Slovak defense ministry spokesperson Danka Capakova.

The creation of the agreement was approved by the two cabinets at their last joint session in Valtice, Czech Republic in 2015.

Slovakia is currently using Mig-29 aircraft. It's also negotiating the lease or purchase of Swedish JAS-39 Gripen aircraft, which are being used by the Czech Republic. Endit
