Brazilian Supreme Court order to suspend Senate president defied

Xinhua, December 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Brazilian Senate on Tuesday defied a Supreme Court order to suspend Senate President Renan Calheiros.

The Senate released an official statement, saying that they will wait for the senators' deliberations before following the order to suspend Calheiros.

Calheiros was suspended on Monday by the Supreme Court at the request of an opposition party. The argument was that, as the head of the Senate, Calheiros is in the presidential succession, which he could not occupy while he was indicted for corruption.

The defiance of the Senate is only the latest episode of a dispute between the powers of Brazil, which has been escalating in latest months after the impeachment of former President Dilma Rousseff. Endi
