New York City FC's Spanish striker David Villa Sanchez has been named this year's Most Valuable Player by Major League Soccer (MLS).

MLS announced the results of the vote on Tuesday. New York Red bulls forward Wright Phillips ranked second and midfielder Sacha Kljestan was third.

The 35-year-old Villa, part of the 2010 World Cup-winning team, contributed 23 goals and 4 assists this season, the second-best showing in the league. He also led his team to the playoffs.

The former Barcelona and Atletico Madrid star has also scored the most goals in MLS over the past two seasons. Endit
