Speeding car ploughs into pedestrians in eastern India, killing 3 and injuring 7

Xinhua, December 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least three persons were killed and more than seven others injured after a speeding car rammed into several passing vehicles and pedestrians in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata Monday, a senior police official said.

"The mishap took place when the driver of the private car jumped a red light and hit several bikes as well as pedestrians who had been waiting to cross a road in the southern part of the city," he said on condition of anonymity.

The incident happened as the driver, who was drunk, lost control of the speeding car, the official said, adding while two persons died on the spot, one succumbed to his injuries in a local hospital where the other injured are being currently treated.

The driver of the car has not yet been arrested as he is also being treated in the hospital for injuries and is said to be in a serious condition, the official said.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, he added.

India records one of the world's highest road accidents, with over 130,000 people dying every year, according to official statistics. The accidents are mostly due to rash driving, drunk driving and poor road conditions. Endit
