The number of guest nights in private accommodation increased by 14.3 percent in the first nine months this year while that of five-star hotels decreased from last year's 81.2 percent to 78 percent, according to a Malta Hotels Restaurants Associations (MHRA) survey.

Overall the accommodation establishments in the country grew by 1.9% in the third quarter of 2016.

Malta is set to start the seventh consecutive year of record growth in the tourism sector, Malta's Minister for Tourism Edward Zammit Lewis said.

There was an increase in the volume and capacity in the sector with over 1.9 million arrivals by end of 2016 and a total expenditure of 1.7 billion euros in expenditure.

Last month, Lewis announced the country's objective to surpass the 2 million tourist arrivals' mark for 2017 while addressing the parliament on budget. Endit
