Estonia to hold additional training exercise for reservists

Xinhua, December 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Estonian government decided on Thursday to hold additional training for 303 reservists from Dec. 2 to Dec. 5.

The Estonian Defence Forces will call a company-sized Defence League unit and a company-sized Signals and Headquarters Battalion unit to the short notice exercise "Okas" (Quill), the Estonian Ministry of Defence said in a press release.

"The goal of additional reservist training is to test the national defence chain of command, starting with a decision being taken by the Government of the Republic, all the way to reservists in the rapid response structure, to a unit attaining combat readiness," said Estonian Minister of Defence Margus Tsahkna.

The National Defence Act which entered into force this year reflects Estonia's national defence principles and provides the opportunity to quickly call up reservists within 24 hours, said the press release.

This weekend, a total of 2,000 servicemen and Defence League district members will be participating in various training exercises, including more than 900 people participating in the Defence League's major autumn training exercise "Hurricane" in western Estonia, 200 Defence League district members and 50 police officers training to secure Toompea, where the Estonian government and the parliament are situated, and 400 Defence League district members training to protect Tallinn Airport.
