Israel's new ambassador arrives in Turkey

Xinhua, December 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

Israel's new ambassador to Turkey, Eitan Naeh, arrived in Ankara on Thursday, reported the state-run Anadolu news Agency.

Israel and Turkey have a "history of helping each other in times of need," Naeh said upon his arrival at Ankara's Esenboga International Airport.

Naeh previously served with the Israeli embassy in Ankara during the 1990s. He also served at the Israeli mission in London.

In June, Turkey and Israel agreed to restore full diplomatic relations, six years after the killing of 10 Turkish activists aboard a ship attempting to get through Israel's naval blockade on Gaza.

Turkey's new ambassador to Israel, Kemal Okem, is scheduled to arrive in Tel Aviv in the first week of December, Turkish media reported.

In the aftermath of the 2010 attack, Turkey demanded an official apology from Israel, compensation for families of the victims, and lifting of Israel's blockade on Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu apologized in 2013 to Turkey's then-premier and now president Recep Tayyip Erdogan for the attack.

Under a normalization deal, Israel reportedly agreed to pay out 20 million U.S. dollars in compensation to the bereaved and injured in the raid. Endit
