15.5 pct of footballers in Malta's top division approach to fix match

Malta's Football Association reiterated on Wednesday zero tolerance towards any form of corruption, in view of 15.5 percent of footballers playing in Malta's top division has been approached to fix a match.
An international study by the global players union Fifpro published Tuesday, has revealed that in Malta 15.5 percent of players playing in Malta's top division has been approached to fix a match sometime throughout his career. This was more than double the global average of the findings analysed.
The study by the global players union Fifpro was carried out by analysing 53 countries by means of an anonymous questionnaire. Malta had 112 participants in this questionnaire.
Furthermore,18.2 percent of Maltese players said they were aware of match-fixing in the league. Fifpro however made it clear that the data does not indicate that match-fixing was an endemic problem in world football.
In response to this report's findings, Malta's Football Association released a statement on Wednesday evening, saying it shall be analysing the findings of Fifpro's global survey.
They reiterated zero tolerance towards any form of corruption and said it had introduced whistle blower protection measures to encourage football players to come forward with match-fixing approaches. Endit
