Bulgarian president urges parliament to form government

Xinhua, November 30, 2016 Adjust font size:

Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev here on Tuesday urged the National Assembly to form a government amid the complicated situation that arose after the resignation of the GERB party-led coalition cabinet in mid-November.

"Today the country is in a really tricky, I would say, complicated situation, in which we must find the best way out for the people," Plevneliev said after a meeting of the Consultative Council on National Security.

"I want to say very clearly that I still believe there is potential to form a government," Plevneliev said despite that the two largest parliamentary groups, GERB and BSP Left Bulgaria, have said they would not try to form a government within this National Assembly.

Plevneliev said it was still possible that some of the minor parliamentary groups would be able to form a government and to not allow the country to fall into a parliamentary crisis.

On this basis, Plevneliev would hand the third mandate to form a government to those who would make a sincere attempt and have the biggest chance to form a government within this National Assembly "because it is my will," he said.

According to Bulgarian Constitution, if the parties in the parliament fail to form a new cabinet after three attempts, Plevneliev shall appoint a caretaker government, and early parliamentary elections would be held in late March or early April 2017. Endit
