Polish speaker calls for strengthened role of national parliaments in EU

Xinhua, November 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

The European Union (EU) needs renewal with the strengthening of the role of national parliaments, Speaker of Poland's Sejm, or the lower house of the parliament, Marek Kuchcinski, said on Tuesday.

Opening the 4th Polish-Swedish Forum, Kuchcinski expressed hope that the forum would contribute in helping the European Union solve its key problems and strengthen Polish-Swedish cooperation.

Kuchcinski also stressed that Poles need an efficient European Union based on the "united in diversity" principle. "The European Union needs a renewal by referring to the efficiency of its activities, both inside and outside its borders," the Polish Press Agency quoted him as saying.

Swedish Parliament Speaker Urban Ahlin said that among important topics of the forum was the situation in the EU after Brexit, security in the Baltic Sea region, and innovation and development.

According to Ahlin, Brexit will have a big impact on Poland and Sweden as Britain is an important importer of goods from the two countries. Endit
