Minister urges safety overhaul on construction sites after accident

Minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development Chen Zhenggao on Monday urged an "immediate and comprehensive" safety overhaul in the construction industry, after a deadly construction site disaster at a power plant in eastern China.

There will be "zero tolerance" to major potential safety hazards and irregularities, Chen said at a specially convened meeting on work safety at construction sites.

Tight deadlines, inadequate labor and building materials, as well as poor management cause hidden dangers, Chen said.

While demanding that enterprises put their house in order, he urged the ministry's local branches to set up leading groups for work safety to strengthen supervision and inspection.

Coal mines, traffic, dangerous chemicals, fireworks, power and heating supply sectors were also cited as areas in need of more attention, China's top work safety watchdog said Sunday.
