Death toll rises to 45 in train collision in northern Iran

Xinhua, November 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

Death toll has risen to 45 in the train accident in northern Iran on Friday, Iran's Red Crescent Society announced on Saturday.

Deputy of Relief and Rescue Organization of Semnan province Red Crescent Society, Ali Yahyaei, released the figure, adding that another 103 people were injured.

Most of the injured people have been discharged from the medical centers after receiving the basic treatments, Yahyaei was quoted as saying by official IRNA news agency.

Reports said that two trains collided in Haft-Khan train station located between Semnan and Damghan cities in Iran's Semnan province at 7:45 a.m. local time (0415 GMT) on Friday.

Wagons were set in fire as the trains collided and the deaths and most of the injuries were due to the burning, reports said.

Three railway staff have been detained over the incident, the prosecutor of Semnan province, Heidar Asiaei, was quoted as saying by semi-official Mehr news agency.

Iranian officials said on Friday that human failure in observing the duties was the cause of the incident.

Asiaei added that the results of investigations and interrogations will be announced later. Endit
