One quarter of women in Greece victims of abuse: survey

Xinhua, November 25, 2016 Adjust font size:

Approximately 24 percent of women in Greece have suffered physical abuse, according to a survey released on Thursday in Athens.

Nov. 25 has been designated by the UN as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. On the occasion, the Hellenic Society of Forensic Medicine (HSFM) issued a press statement containing alarming data.

According to a recent HSFM survey, in most cases, the identified perpetrators are the victims' partners. Domestic violence in six percent of the cases reported also includes sexual abuse.

According to estimates, about 5,000 incidents of sexual abuse are occurring in Greece each year, according to HSFM.

However, only some 150 of these cases are properly reported to reach the courts.

HSFM representatives attributed the great gap to the shortage of forensic medical examiners nationwide needed to assess individuals who have experienced sexual assault. Endit
