Arrested suspects were targeting French police, public spaces: report

Xinhua, November 24, 2016 Adjust font size:

Seven men arrested over the weekend planned to attack top police sites and amusement parks in France before their plans were foiled, according to local media reports on Wednesday.

Itele news channel said one of the suspects, still in custody, told investigators police sites had been targeted by the group arrested in southern and eastern France.

Police also found internet searches for possible targets, including an amusement park, it added.

At the weekend, the Directorate General of Internal Security arrested two men in the southern city of Marseille and four suspects in Strasbourg, northeast France where the country's largest Christmas market is due to open.

Aged between 29 and 37 years, the arrested suspects are of French, Moroccan and Afghan origin. Two of them went to Syria in 2015.

As part of anti-terror operations following deadly Islamic State attacks, 418 have been arrested so far in the country, according to Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve.

A total of 230 people have been killed in terrorist attacks since January 2015, according to official figures. Endit
