Lithuania pledges to continue help to Ukrainian army

Xinhua, November 23, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Lithuanian defense minister assured the head of the Ukrainian army on Tuesday that the Baltic state's attention to Ukraine's army will not diminish.

Lithuania's chief of defense Juozas Olekas and the head of the Ukraine's army general Viktor Muzhenko met here on Tuesday to discuss bilateral and multilateral military cooperation and the geopolitical situation in the region.

"Lithuania's attention to Ukraine will not diminish in 2017," announced the Lithuanian defense ministry in a press release.

Olekas, a social democrat, will leave the position as defense minister later this year, as the new government takes office.

Although Olekas' successor still remains to be seen, he has assured that Lithuanian's support to Ukraine's army will continue.

"One of its first decisions by the newly-elected Parliament of Lithuania approved the continuity of Lithuanian policy regarding Ukraine last week," said the ministry.

Both countries have expanded their military cooperation since 2014. Lithuania has been sending its military instructors to train Ukrainian troops. Endit
