Burundi's president swears in new ombudsman

Xinhua, November 23, 2016 Adjust font size:

Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza Tuesday swore in Edouard Nduwimana, as the new ombudsman of Burundi for the next six years, in a ceremony that took place at Kigobe Parliament House in the capital Bujumbura.

Nduwimana was inaugurated before President Nkurunziza, heads of both chambers of the parliament, other lawmakers, the east African country's dignitaries and diplomats accredited to Burundi.

In his oath, new Ombudsman Nduwimana swore "fidelity to the president of Burundi, to the national constitution and to the laws of Burundi people."

Nduwimana also swore and promised to accomplish his duties with "honesty and impartiality" and not to reveal any secret that he will have obtained during and after his assignments.

The new Burundian ombudsman was on Monday approved by both chambers of the Burundian parliament.

In a related development, Jacques Bigirimana, chairman of the National Liberation Forces (FNL) party believes that Nduwimana will be able to carry out his assignments as he has a lot of experience in mediation.

"We expect a lot from him (Nduwimana) because he is intelligent and he loves his nation. He will not learn much because his former assignments are similar to his new duties. We trust him and we hope that he will help Burundians seeking his assistance," Bigirimana said upon Nduwimana's inauguration.

Nduwimana, a Tutsi from Kayanza province, is going to serve a six-year-term as the second ombudsman of Burundi in replacement of Mohamed Rukara, another Tutsi whose term has ended.

Before his new assignments as Burundi's ombudsman, Nduwimana was the second vice-speaker of the National Assembly (parliament lower house).

Previously, Nduwimana was the home affairs minister and the governor of the Burundi's northern province of Kayanza. Enditem
