The number of people highly satisfied with their living conditions grew considerably in Italy for the first time since 2011, the National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) said on Tuesday.
"Satisfaction with the economic situation improved, while satisfaction with other specific aspects of life, such as family, friends, leisure time and health status, was stable, as was trust in other people," the institute said in the survey "Aspects of daily life."
Overall, the percentage of the population highly satisfied with their life increased to 41 percent in 2016 compared to 35.1 percent in 2015. The report considered the opinions of citizens aged 14 and older.
It was the first increase registered in five years, ISTAT highlighted.
In 2011, the European sovereign debt crisis put Italy under severe strain, and in the intervening years the country has faced its worst economic crisis since World War II.
Its economy, the eurozone's third largest, started emerging slowly from recession in early 2015.
The percentage of people satisfied with their personal economic situation was higher this year than in 2015, namely 50.5 percent from 47.5 percent respectively, data showed.
The percentage of households judging their economic situation improved.
"In general, satisfaction decreased as people grew older, with the exception of the age groups 35 to 44 and 65 to 74. Women and men were nearly equally satisfied," ISTAT said.
The level of satisfaction with the job situation also increased in 2016, but only slightly.
High rates of satisfaction were registered when personal aspects of life were concerned: some 90.1 percent of Italians in the survey were happy with their family relationships, and 82.8 percent with their friendships, while 81.2 percent expressed a positive opinion on their health status.
Criminality remained one of Italians' major concerns, however, together with air pollution, traffic, and parking problems, these three latest issues showed unchanged percentages in 2016 compared to the previous year. Endit
