NATO inaugurated a new small headquarters -- NATO Force Integration Unit (NFIU) -- in Hungary, the security organization announced Monday.
It is the latest NFIU to join the network of headquarters established along the eastern flank of NATO, according to NATO's press release.
General Salvatore Farina, Commander of Allied Joint Force Command (JFC) Brunssum, participated in the inauguration ceremony of the Hungarian NFIU in Szekesfehervar, central Hungary on November 18.
The primary operational task of the Hungarian NFIU is to help facilitate the fast and effective deployment of NATO forces, especially the alliance's very high readiness joint task force.
The NFIU is involved in collective defense planning and plays an important role in the preparation and execution of NATO forces' exercises.
"NFIUs are smart, agile and joint military headquarters representing a multinational effort and with this latest NFIU in Hungary we add more capability, expertise and enthusiasm into NATO's NFIU network," General Farina said.
After the 2014 Wales Summit, NATO planned the establishment of eight NFIUs within the territories of NATO's eastern allies.
The units are part of the readiness action plan, the biggest reinforcement of NATO's collective defense in the wake of Ukraine crisis.
Each NFIU will be manned by around 40 staff, half of them coming from the host nation. Endit
