Albania holds mayoral by-election in southern municipality

A mayoral by-election was held in Kolonja Municipality in southern Albania on Sunday after mayor Arben Malo died of a heart attack.

The mayoral by-election in Kolonja is seen by Albania's two main political camps as another test ahead of the 2017 parliamentary elections in the country.

Socialist Party was represented by the candidate Ilia Stefo while the opposition was represented by Dritan Hajro from the Environmentalist Agrarian Party.

The ruling party, Socialist Party, declared that the voting process went smoothly, the opposition main political party, Democratic Party accused the government of buying votes and intimidating voters at the polls.

More than 15,000 voters of Kolonja Municipality were eligible to cast their vote Sunday for their new Mayor, local media here reported.

However, according to the Central Elections Commission, the voters turnout in these mayoral by-elections resulted at 49.6 percent.

Voting centers opened at 7 a.m. and closed at 7 p.m. while several incidents were reported by media here during the day. Enditem
