The first Federation of overseas Chinese in Lithuania was established here on Saturday.

Wei Ruixing, Chinese ambassador to Lithuania, said on the founding event that various challenges appeared during preparation of the federation's establishment, but it's finally founded after tremendous efforts were spent.

"The establishment of the federation meets the common need of the overseas Chinese living in Lithuania," he said.

Wei pointed out that the diligent overseas Chinese in Lithuania pay close attention to the development of China all these years. During the past years, the overseas Chinese have established careers in Lithuania and contributed to the economic and social development of the Baltic country.

"Hope all of you will continue working hard, contribute to promoting mutual understanding and friendship between our two peoples, and help enhance the sound ties of cooperation between our two countries," he added.

Wang Jinwei, chairman of the federation, said it's the principle and purpose of the federation to protect the lawful right and interests of overseas Chinese living in Lithuania.

It aims to improve the friendship among the overseas Chinese, help them adapt to the mainstream society of Lithuania, he said.

The Charter of Federation of overseas Chinese was approved on the first general assembly of the federation.

There are about 500 overseas Chinese in Lithuania currently. Most of them came to the Baltic state after 1991 when China and Lithuania established diplomatic ties. Endit
