Egypt's junior wrestling champion killed in traffic accident

Xinhua, November 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

An Egyptian junior freestyle female wrestling champion was killed in a traffic accident Saturday in the Suez Canal province of Ismailia.

Reem Magdy, 16, who won the bronze medal of Cadet Wrestling World Championships in Sept. 2016 in Georgia, was hit by an unknown car on Ismailia-Cairo highway hours after midnight.

A massive funeral procession was held for the late young champion attended by senior officials including the governor of Ismailia, representatives from the Sports Ministry, lawmakers and others.

Road accidents are common in the most populous Arab country due to lack of highway monitoring systems, poor road maintenance and negligence of traffic rules.

"Egypt loses about 12,000 lives due to road traffic crashes every year. It has a road traffic fatality rate of 42 deaths per 100,000 population," says a report from the World Health Organization. Endit
