Ukraine bans poultry imports from Bulgaria, Hungary over safety concerns

Ukraine has banned the imports of poultry products from Bulgaria and Hungary due to the safety concerns, local media reported Tuesday, citing a statement of the State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection.

The ban was imposed after a notification from the World Organization for Animal Health about the outbreaks of infectious bird diseases in the European countries, the statement said.

The so-called Newcastle disease has been detected in Bulgaria's farms, while bird flu cases have been found in Hungary, it said.

Noting that Newcastle disease outbreaks among wild birds were also reported in six other European countries, Ukraine' s food safety agency asked importers to make sure that all the poultry imports into the country meet sanitary and safety criteria.

From January through October of 2016, Ukraine poultry imports rose 44 percent year-on-year to 67,900 tons. Endit
