French gov't to ask extension of state of emergency: French PM

Xinhua, November 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

The French government will seek to further prolong a state of emergency imposed after the attacks here last year as risks of other terror attacks remain high, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said Tuesday.

"France must be lucid about the threat, that's why we will be proposing an extension of the state of emergency to parliament," Valls told lawmakers, without giving details on the planned extension period.

Valls added that France's military commitment in Syria and Iraq and the upcoming presidential election required further mobilization, mainly by prolonging emergency rules which offer more power to police to search homes and arrest suspects without judicial warrant.

At the end of July, the French parliament approved a six-month extension of emergency rules to late January 2017 after a truck assault in the southern city of Nice.

The emergency rules have been imposed in the wake of the November 2015 deadly attack in which a group of armed attackers stormed restaurants, a theater hall and soccer stadium, killing about 130 people. Endit
